Jobs and the Future (yikes)

Brian Swanick came to our class and talked to us about how to get ahead in our careers and get the most out of our careers. He also made us think about where we see ourselves in 5 years, which really made us think about where we will be and what we will be doing not only in our careers but in life as well.

One of the things that Brian talked about was using what you have like working for the smartest person you can find that will pay you a living wage. This stuck out for me because it I never thought about how much you can learn from your boss, and if you learn from someone who is successful then you are more likely to gain the skills you need to be successful. He also said you should always be learning and that even though you may think you know everything about your field, you probably don’t there is always more to learn.

Another thing that really stuck out to me was when he talked about not being a waiter but being a creator. He explained that people need to take the initiative rather than waiting for an opportunity to just happen to you. You have to go out and find your own opportunities. Another saying Brian said was to design your life or other people will do it for you, which was kind of the same thing but if you don’t go out and get the things you want others will take your opportunities.

This relates to advertising because Brian does freelance and works with Facebook ads. Even though Brian didn’t talk a whole lot about advertising his speech could relate to any field and could really help people make some very big decisions or at least point them in the right direction.
